The Conference Began as a Way for One Med Student to Educate Peers ...
Before officially known as "Doctor," Cham Sante was witness to the experience of a lifelong friend, who, because they were a transgender person, suffered discrimination across several aspects of life. Cham was especially struck to learn that even the medical profession was a source of fear in this person's life, "causing the friend not to seek necessary medical treatment for illness and injury. Later, when Ms. Sante was working in an emergency room, she saw health care workers openly mock transgender patients, treating them like “sideshows." As a student at the *Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Sante made it a goal that medical students and the broader community should have an understanding and awareness of transgender people — those who identify with a gender other than the one they were born with" (Falchek, David. TCMC student's commitment leads to transgender conference. Scranton, 15 March 2015. Web.).
